JOB TITLE: Network Engineer

Experience : 5+ years required

Mandatory : Tech stack- nexus 7k, 9k & 5k, routing and switching, ASA, Fortinet, aws cloud environment
          

BASIC PURPOSE: (In one short paragraph, write an overall summary of the position's purpose (the reason the job exists).  Be sure to describe the position's major expected end results.)

Analyze business needs and develop or procure technological solutions for the company (worldwide); procure methods and implement solutions in alignment with departmental goals and cost effectiveness. Monitor and evaluate solutions, troubleshoot issues as necessary to ensure service quality and IT systems performance. Support includes specification, installation, testing and monitoring of network systems and peripherals within established standards and guidelines to deliver operational excellence.

 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: (List (in order of relevant importance) a series of brief statements which describe the position's major functions and end results. For each activity, briefly state what is done, how the activity is accomplished and why the activity is performed.  List normally contains 6-8 major ongoing responsibilities.)

Perform basic analysis in data network planning, engineering and design; work directly with business groups to develop solutions. Performs project preparation and setup as assigned by project leader. Manage project implementation and rollout and may sign off on vendor deliverables. Participate and may devise solutions for areas of project responsibility.  Create or upgrade network components to meet business demands and/or infrastructure upgrades.

 

Evaluate LAN/WAN hardware and software requirements and capabilities related to user needs and make recommendations for purchase and implementation. Develop and document standards for network architecture along with coordinating network integration under the general guidance of the network manager. Coordinate maintenance for network equipment and troubleshoot problems with department users and ships. Installs software programs on LAN or WAN. May formulate programming and configuration system changes for software applications to facilitate network system capability.

 

Utilize monitoring tools and techniques to insure optimum system availability by the early identification of equipment or software warnings and the proactive scheduling of preventive maintenance. Partner with vendors to schedule and implement recommended maintenance updates.  Ensure key performance indicators and interconnections with other systems are operational and do not exceed established thresholds.  Provide solutions to prevent problems from occurring in area of responsibility. Schedule and monitor backups of critical systems to insure availability in case of system failure.

 

Develop uniform operation procedures for Network (LAN) and wide area Network (WAN) hardware and software and communicate these procedures to ensure departmental efficiency, including implementation of self-service where appropriate.

 

Provide infrastructure support for events (inaugurals, charters, etc.) including network troubleshooting and support for devices connected to the network, access to corporate based systems, and additional infrastructure for onboard projects.

 

Provide repositioning support to vessels and Piers worldwide (new and recurrent piers) including but not limited to the evaluation, installation and monitoring of equipment.

Participate of the Network on-call schedule as required.

 

Research and engage vendors, procure quotes for budget submission. Communicate project milestones to involved business departments.  Work with circuit provides (terrestrial and satellite) to maintain and monitor quality of service implementation.

 

Assist the telecommunication team with day-to-day tasks for the EU offices (Ex. Agent creation/modification, general support).

 

Perform other job-related functions as assigned.

 

DIMENSIONS: (In this section, provide important quantitative data regarding the scope of the position.  All information should be annualized. The Network Engineering and Operations teams supports all the business office worldwide (Asia, Australia, Europe, South America and US), all NCLH's datacenters (US and Europe) and our fleet's local and wide area networks, we support the business activities of every NCLH team member, vendor and passenger of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings on a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week, 365 day a year schedule.  There is no technology activity corporate wide that occurs without the monitoring and services of the group from printing, to passengers boarding our vessels worldwide. Every reservation, email, shore excursion, folio, accounting process, purchase onboard, cruise booking, and security function happens over equipment the group supports, maintains, configures and monitors.  The team handles approximately 60 to 80 projects per calendar year, including dry-dock activities, new business initiatives, remedial initiatives, and support projects.

 

NATURE AND SCOPE: (Briefly describe a few of the problems/ challenges most frequently encountered in performing this position's responsibilities.  Indicate the limits and controls on this position's authority regarding the performance of daily activities.  Give examples of problems and actions typically referred to this position for resolution and/or approval.  Is the position required to establish new policies and procedures or make recommendations for changes in the department?  Explain the major contacts the position has with people inside and outside the organization.  Indicate the purpose and frequency of these interactions.  Identify direct and indirect reporting relationships between this position and its supervisors and/or subordinates (if applicable)).

Position reports to Manager of Network Engineering and Operations with a team of network engineers under general supervision. Troubleshoot common issues, assist other groups in troubleshooting, provide data traces and packet analysis to applications personnel, maintain all networking equipment, perform upgrades, travel for the purpose of support and or troubleshooting to the fleet and remote offices and work to provide enhancements to existing systems and propose new ones.  Work with a number of groups in analyzing a need or problem, understand the data flow in order to be able to place a scope in a correct location, or work with vendors to diagnose a hardware issue.  The network engineering group is an elevated privilege group that has control access to all network routers, switches, firewalls, and appliances involved in connectivity corporate wide both ship and shore side.  The team is responsible for performing changes and upgrades to critical infrastructure in a safe and controlled manner.  The network engineering group works with internal groups, vendor support groups for hardware and vendor support organizations for installed applications and appliances to ensure proper function. 

 

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE: (Degree required or equivalent experience. Functional area of expertise for required degree (i.e., Marketing, Business Administration, Computer Science, Hotel Management, etc.). Years of experience required. Nature of experience required (i.e., technical skills, Supervisory/ management experience, interpersonal skills, communication skills). Other specialized skills.

EDUCATION:  Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, MIS or related field of study; or any equivalent combination of relevant experience, education and training.  Mid-level networking certifications strongly preferred.

 

EXPERIENCE:  3 - 5 years of experience with configuration and management of enterprise networking hardware including routers, switches, voice over IP telephony, wireless infrastructure, firewalls and internet proxy devices.  Recent experience with network administration / configuration/ management related. Industry experience strongly preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS: Experience with networking protocols to include routing (BGP, EIGRP, OSPF) and switching (Cisco proprietary protocols and network standard protocols including but not limited to spanning tree, trunking protocol, MPLS technology.)  Ability to work independently and multitask in a real time environment with good troubleshooting skills. Sound decision-making skills with ability to meet deliverables of infrastructure projects. Ability to maintain technical expertise in all areas of network and computer hardware and software interconnection and interfacing, including but not limited to: routers, switches, VoIP, Wireless, and Security. Ability to travel offsite including international locations on average 40% annually; work includes occasional weekend or after hour time, when necessary. Ability to read, write and understand technical manuals, procedural documentation and original equipment manufacturer guides.  Ability to conduct research into network issues and products as required.  Good verbal and written communication skills with a strong commitment to excellent customer service.  Strong initiative, priority setting and collaboration skills. Ability to lift potentially heavy hardware equipment within reasonable accommodation.
