Process of Interview : Notes from Manager

1.            Phone screen: 30 minutes by zoom, with camera on. This will assess their general background and actual experience level. After a brief resume review, I advance most candidates to this step, since resumes tend to be very similar and do not always distinguish very meaningfully between candidates. I am not looking for a specific industry background, other than general web application development. I will provide many time slots for these screens and can process 3-6 of them on any given day.

2.            Take Home Test: Those who pass the phone screen will be invited to complete a take home test. This is a proprietary written scenario and asks the candidate to produce up to 4 pages of deliverables demonstrating skills in database, process design, and output for end users. The test is designed to be brief and should not take the skilled candidate more than 2 hours, but they have 24 hours to complete it so they can take their time and think carefully without the pressure of a real-time interview. I ask them to tell me exactly when they want to receive it, at any time of day, so that it is a 24-hour window that is convenient for them.

3.            Online Whiteboard: Those who pass the take home test are asked to participate in an online whiteboarding session with one of my developers to answer some coding questions and show their work in real time and discuss the problems with my developers. We use an online whiteboard called codeshare.io

4.            Team Interview: Those who pass the whiteboard are asked to have a traditional interview with the full development team, consisting mostly of typical HR-type questions and some technical questions.
